Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, the former Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, recently shared his remarkable five-year journey, unveiling the challenges, learning experiences, and his dedication to the people.
A humble beginning
In his own words, Al-Sultan Abdullah acknowledged the challenging moments he faced at the beginning of his term as Agong due to his lack of experience.
Reflecting on his early days, he recalled, “When inaugurated, I had only been the Sultan of Pahang for 15 days; there were many things I did not know, and then I was immediately appointed as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.”
Yet, he embraced the challenge, learning slowly through inquiry and extensive reading.
Departure day of the Agong and Queen
As the nation marks the Departure Day of Sultan Abdullah and Queen Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah to their home state of Pahang, emotions run high, especially among those who served alongside His Majesty throughout his reign.
Shouldering the responsibility as the Agong
Al-Sultan Abdullah’s journey was not without its trials. Leading the nation as the Agong meant shouldering the responsibility of ensuring the country’s security for the well-being of all citizens.
He expressed, “Moreover, shouldering the responsibility as the Agong for these five years is also seen as no easy task.”
5 years without salary
In a move that echoes humility and dedication, Al-Sultan Abdullah revealed that he did not accept a salary during his entire five-year term, putting service above personal gain.
Learning, leading & collaborating
Navigating the complexities of governance, Al-Sultan Abdullah actively participated in pre-Cabinet meetings and discussions.
Quoting His Majesty, “I will ask about any Cabinet papers that I need to know, and if I disagree, I express that view. Alhamdulillah, all my views and advice are accepted, and vice versa.”

An interesting facet of Al-Sultan Abdullah’s journey is his commitment to record-keeping.
He noted down essential information and admonitions, accumulating seven books of valuable insights that may serve as a guide for future leaders.
