With a new Agong expected to take the helm on the last day of January, all that’s on every Malaysian’s mind is this: Will there be a public holiday?
Alas, it will be business as usual for the country as there will be no special public holiday being issued for Jan 31, where Johor Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar will ascend to the throne.
Fahmi: No public holiday for installation of new Agong on Jan 31
NST reported that Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that the matter of whether to declare a public holiday wasn’t discussed during a Cabinet meeting today.
There has been no announcement (on the matter) today, and the next Cabinet meeting will take place after the installation ceremony of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said.
This comes after there was heavy speculation online that Malaysians can look forward to a public holiday after Sultan Ibrahim gets coronated.
With the installation ceremony set to take place soon, Sultan Ibrahim will become Malaysia’s 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong (YDPA) after he was elected into the role last October, where he will be succeeding Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.
