For those who aren’t familiar with hitchhiking, it’s basically a person asking for a free ride from a random stranger who’s kind enough to pick them up.
A foreign couple that recently travelled in Malaysia is receiving brickbats from netizens after they shared a clip of them hitchhiking their way to Taman Negara.
Holds massive sign while looking for ride to Taman Negara
In a 21-second clip shared by @silkyrontheroad on TikTok, it showed the couple standing by the side of a busy road while holding a giant sign with ‘Taman Negara’ written on it, which was the place they intended to go.
Instead of booking an e-hailing ride, the couple opted to hitchhike their way there and flailed their arms at passing vehicles in hopes someone would be willing to give them a ride.
In the in-text caption, they cheekily added that they were “hitchhiking with the biggest sign.”
In the end, their persistence paid off after a lorry driver decided to send them to Taman Negara, with the clip ending with the couple posing with him while having big smiles on their faces.
Foreign couple slammed for hitchhiking to Taman Negara
The clip, which garnered over 560,000 views, saw Malaysians criticising the foreign couple of taking advantage of the locals’ kindness instead of paying their way to their destination.
‘Go back to your country and try this (hitchhiking) to your own country?’
‘Don’t’ travel if you don’t have the money.’
‘Very smart of you…taking advantage (of Malaysians’ kindness).’
In response to the criticism, the couple said they hitchhiked not because they didn’t have the funds to travel, but to meet and connect with the locals better.
