If you’re not familiar with the term ‘begpacker’, it refers to foreign travellers who often resort to begging as a way to solicit money and sympathy from the public.
One such foreign tourist was spotted begging for money at an R&R in Selangor, triggering a wave of backlash from netizens who were angered by his laziness and called for stern action to be taken.
‘Begpacker’ asks for money at R&R
In a post shared by @pedoqpop on X (formerly Twitter), it showed a photo of a foreign backpacker sitting by the corridor of an R&R in Ulu Bernam, Selangor.
Beside the ‘begpacker’ was a sign written in both Malay and English, which read as follows:
Hi, I have been travelling for 9 years. I really miss home. Please help me raise money for a ticket and some food. Thank you.”
Not far from him was a small metal bowl used to collect donations, where several RM1 and RM5 notes were spotted inside it.
In the caption, the OP called upon the the police and PLUS Malaysia Berhad to look into the matter and deport the ‘begpacker’ back to his hometown, adding that Malaysians had no obligation to fund his plane ticket home.
M’sians slam ‘begpacker’ asking for donations
In the comment section, netizens were equally as enraged by the ‘begpacker’s shamelessness and roundly condemned him for it.
‘He can come here but can’t return home? Malaysia needs to be strict like Korea, where you need to show your itinerary, the hotel you booked, and return flight ticket before you enter the country. If not, please don’t let these people in.’
‘He doesn’t miss his home country. He just wants to find modal to go to the next country, where he will beg for money. Lots of white worshippers in Asia.’
‘Ask him to work and teach him the concept of earning a daily wage. Ask him to either clean the toilet or drain. No such thing as free money.’
