Malaysia is famous for its food, and recently, a foreigner joined the fanbase and shared how addicted he became to Malaysian cuisine.
Darren Cronian, a British citizen who found himself stranded in Malaysia during the Covid-19 pandemic, took to social media to share how he fell head over heels for the humble karipap.
Stranded but smitten by karipap
“Not many people know this, but during the pandemic, I was stranded in Malaysia,” Darren wrote in a recent post on Threads.
“I tried to get flights, but they were either cancelled or countries closed their borders.”
Unable to leave, Darren ended up living in Malaysia for 14 months — and it was during that time that he discovered his love for karipap.
Every morning, I would go to the MyNews at my condo and buy two karipap with a coffee,” he shared.

His morning ritual became so consistent that even the shop assistant began preparing his order in advance. “It got to the point where the lady would see me walking toward the shop and would have the karipap and coffee ready for me.”
He also declared IKEA’s version of the curry puff as the best he’s ever tasted.
Flew 6,000 miles for nasi lemak
But Darren’s love for Malaysian food doesn’t stop at karipap. In another post, he revealed just how deep his cravings run:
Not many people know this (yes, it’s another Malaysian food craving story 😂) but I once flew 6,000 miles for Nasi Lemak.

Originally, he had planned to head to the Greek island of Kos for a short getaway. However, his cravings took over, and in a completely spontaneous decision, he booked a flight to Kuala Lumpur instead — just to eat nasi lemak.
Whether it’s karipap or nasi lemak, one thing is clear — Darren’s love for Malaysian food is as bold as the flavours themselves.
Netizens’ reaction
Netizens flocked to the comments, sharing how much they love the food too.
