Every Chinese New Year, businesses and individuals would hire lion dance troupes to usher in good luck and prosperity for the year ahead.
However, it can also take a dangerous turn, as seen in a viral video involving a lion dance troupe in Sabah.
Firecrackers get tossed at lion dance troupe
The horrifying incident was captured in a 3-minute video which was shared to the Facebook group Global忠政快讯Us 2.0.
In the video, several men were giving instructions to some individuals on how to handle the firecrackers before the lion dance began.
As the dancers positioned themselves in front of the house, the firecrackers were suddenly thrown towards their direction.
In response, the dancers quickly covered the firecrackers with the lion head, leading to a series of explosions and thick smoke emitting from the lion head.
Before it could subside, another person is seen tossing a string of firecrackers towards the dancers, leading to another episode of explosions.
Despite the dangerous act, the dancers continued with the routine before receiving angpaus from the houseowner.
However, it’s not known whether the dancers were injured by the firecrackers exploding inside the lion head.
According to Sin Chew Daily, the incident is believed to have happened in Sabah.
Netizens condemn dangerous act
This video has since gone viral with over 988,000 views at the time of writing.
A majority of netizens were angered by the reckless and dangerous act of throwing firecrackers at the troupe, saying that it could have resulted in injuries.
‘The coach leading the lion dance troupe is useless and unable to protect its members. If I had known about such requirements, I would have turned around and left immediately. You have brought shame upon our Chinese community.’
‘Damn it! Is it just because they have money that’s why they can treat people like this?! They must be severely punished!’
