In a recent raid in Pandan Indah, a Filipino couple was detained by authorities for allegedly purchasing fake Malaysian Identity Cards (MyKad) for RM250 each two years ago.
The couple, who were found to have been using the counterfeit MyKads to secure employment and move around freely, now face serious legal consequences.
According to Harian Metro, the raid was carried out by the Enforcement Division of the National Registration Department (JPN) following a two-week intelligence operation.
The couple, aged 40 and 53, are believed to have bought the fake MyKads from an agent connected to a syndicate operating in the capital.
Believed to have entered M’sia illegally
The suspects, both originally from Basilan, Philippines, admitted to using the fraudulent identification documents to gain employment as security guards.
Investigations also revealed that the couple, who are fluent in Malay, have a child back in the Philippines and are suspected to have entered Malaysia illegally.
The pair was arrested and are set to be brought before the Kuala Lumpur Court today (20 Nov), facing charges under Regulation 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990.
If convicted, the couple could face a maximum sentence of three years in prison, a fine of up to RM20,000, or both.
