KOTA KINABALU – Celebrity preacher and philanthropist Ebit Lew has been slapped with 11 counts of sexual harassment at a Sabah interior court today (Feb 18).
The 37-year-old preacher, who arrived at the Tenom interior court at 9am with his entourage, pleaded not guilty to the charges under Section 509 of the Penal Code.
If convicted, he would be facing a jail term of five years, a fine, or both.
Ebit was later released after posting a RM1,000 bail for each charge, with two sureties. His case has been fixed for trial on April 20-23.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Abd Jalil Hassan said Ebit had allegedly sent lewd pictures and obscene remarks with the intention to outrage the modesty of a person through WhatsApp.
‘It’s a test from God’
However, Ebit remained defiant and claimed that the charges levelled against him was to undermine his image and reputation as a charity worker.
I believe someone or a group of people planned for this, I will get through it, and I consider this as a test from God.
He also said that he was “shocked” to be dragged to court over sexual harassment charges as his goal was to carry out charitable works in Sabah.
“So I look at this as a test from God. It will not bring me down or stop me from carrying out community work here.”
