Man Admits Selling Day-Old Fried Baby Crabs At Jonker Walk After M’sian Officers Raid Fly-Infested Kitchen

Yuck!
If you discovered that your favourite snack was made in filthy and unhygienic conditions, would you be brave enough to eat it again?

Officers from the Melaka Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) and the Melaka Immigration Department (JIM) were left reeling with disgust after they stumbled upon an extremely dirty kitchen that was used to prepare a popular snack.

When they stepped into the kitchen, they were met with the sight of flies swarming the place along with the stench of stale seafood.

On top of that, they also found a refrigerator used to store various supplies which emitted a foul odour, the floor and walls blackened by years of uncleaned dirt and grime, and fried baby crabs being placed on the floor without any covering.

Admitted to selling day-old crabs at Jonker Walk

When confronted by the officers for the kitchen’s deplorable state, the vendor, a foreign national in his 30s who ran a stall at Jonker Walk, admitted to cooking the crabs a day beforehand before selling it the next day.

I usually fry the baby crabs a day in advance and store them in a container to be sold the next day. If I plan to sell them today, I fry them the day before.

Additionally, KPDN and JIM officers also confiscated over 85 packets of cooking oil and bags of wheat flour, which violated the Supply Control Act 1961 as it lacked a proper permit.

The vendor later revealed that the flour was used to make his “signature batter” for the fried baby crabs.

He was later detained by officers and faces potential fines and further action for failing to follow health and safety guidelines.
