Close To 5,000 M’sians Aged 34 & Below Have Gone Bankrupt Over The Past 5 Years

Close to 50% of bankruptcy cases involved personal loans.
Bankruptcy cases is steadily rising among young Malaysians, particularly those aged 34 years old and below over the past five years.

This was revealed by Economy Minister Datuk Seri Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, who said it made up 15% of the 31,517 bankruptcy cases recorded between 2021 and March 2026.

4,704 M’sians bankrupt

According to The Star, a total of 4,704 Malaysian youths had declared bankruptcy within that time frame.

Akmal Nasrullah said nearly half of all bankruptcy cases are caused by personal loans, thus highlighting the urgent need to strengthen financial literacy among Malaysians.

“The government must not only manage failure but also help people break out of cycles of financial hardship and rebuild with dignity,” he added.

Financial lifeline

In light of the dire situation, the government has rolled out the Second Chance Fast Track Policy Programme 2026, where it will provide a structured pathway for bankrupt individuals to rebuild their lives.

Single parents, micro-entrepreneurs, scam victims, and buyers affected by abandoned housing projects will be prioritised under the programme.

Akmal Nasrullah said the policy will now include individuals aged 40 and below with debts not exceeding RM200,000.

As of July 2023,  nearly 14,000 bankruptcy cases involving debts below RM50,000 had been discharged.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s economy grew 5.2% in 2025, and it’s projected to grow at between 4% and 5% in 2026.

However, inflation saw an increase from 1.44% in February 2026 to 1.70% in March 2026 due to higher fuel costs caused by the ongoing Iran conflict.
