She appeared calm when the sentence was read out to her.
Last week, we reported of a woman from China who assaulted an immigration officer at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) during departure checks.

Following the assault, the officer suffered multiple injuries and the Chinese woman was brought to the Sepang magistrate’s court here today for sentencing.

Charged for hurting public servant

31-year-old Fang Fu Yuan was accused of purposely injuring immigration officer Nordiana Atira Shafinas Abdul Rahman at the Immigration Counter, Level 4, Departure Hall, KLIA1, about 8pm on Aug 13.

According to the facts of the case, Fang and her three family members were told to move away from the immigration counter after no record of them entering Malaysia was found and to allow other travellers to proceed.

Fang then became aggressive, started raising her voice, pulled Nordiana’s headscarf and pushed her face and head against a pillar.

Due to the assault, Nordiana suffered head trauma, injuries to the left side of her face, soreness under her eye, swelling and redness. A medical officer later confirmed she also had soft tissue injuries on the right side of her head.

Fang was eventually arrested by a KLIA Criminal Investigation Division team at the Level 5 police beat base at 9.45pm on the same day.

The charge was framed under Section 332 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant, which carries a jail term of up to three years, a fine, or both, reported NST.

Fined RM2,000, jailed for a month

Fang’s lawyers pleaded for a lighter sentence, citing her guilty plea and remorse over the incident, as well as her cooperation during the investigation.

They also said Fang’s children, aged 1½ and 5, fully depend on her and have no one else in Malaysia to support on, adding that the assault was due to “a misunderstanding and communication problems”.

However, the prosecution disagreed, arguing that the case was one of public interest.

“Even if the accused acted out of emotion, her actions injured a public servant. The court must send a clear message that such offences are unacceptable in society,” said deputy public prosecutor Luvithaa Veerasan.

After hearing both sides, Magistrate Khairatul Anisah Jelani sentenced Fang to a month in jail starting from the time of her arrest on Aug 13 and ordered her to pay RM2,000 in fines in default of two months in jail.
