There’s a saying that is often said many times, where it goes: “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. Books aside, that phrase can be applied to people as well.
An elderly woman in Chengdu, a city in China’s Szechuan province, recently went viral after it was revealed that she was actually wealthy enough to own a Bentley but chose to wash dishes at a restaurant to pass time.
Came to work in a Bentley
The woman first came to light after a video of her stepping out of a black Bentley went viral on Weibo.
Dressed in a pink striped top, rubber boots and an apron, the woman was apparently working as a dishwasher at a restaurant and was dropped off in a Bentley by her daughter.
In the video’s caption, it joked that compared to the woman, the restaurant owner was probably the poorest worker around.
In the next frame, the caption reads: “What [the woman] lacks isn’t money, but things to do.”
Washed dishes to escape boredom
Chinese media Oriental Daily and China Times later reported that the woman was, in fact, an extremely well-to-do person who came to work as a dishwasher for an unusual reason.
According to the woman, she chose to take on the humble job to escape from spending time at her home, something which she called “boring”.
“It is extremely boring at home, and I feel agitated if I don’t wash dishes for even a day,” she said.
As for the person who was driving the Bentley, it was revealed to be the woman’s daughter.
Oriental Daily reported that the daughter tried her best to stop her mother from working at the restaurant but was unable to as the latter wanted to “experience life” and supported her decision by sending her to work everyday.
