Being in the service line requires a lot of patience and courtesy when dealing with customers, especially difficult ones. But when done right, it can leave a positive impression on those receiving the service.
A tourist from China recently shared his thoughts about service staff in Malaysia and Singapore, where he opined that those from the former had a warmer attitude than those over the Causeway.
China tourist says M’sian service staff are friendlier than S’pore’s
In the 44-second clip shared by the tourist who goes by the name of ‘Teacher Gogo’ on TikTok, it showed him relaxing underneath a tree and enjoying an ice cream sandwich with a female companion.
While doing so, he shared his thoughts about the attitude among Malaysian and Singaporean service staff during his vacation in Singapore.
According to him, he found that Malaysian Chinese service staff were very welcoming and friendly when serving customers.
He then compared to service staff in Singapore, where he felt there was a lot to be desired in terms of their demeanor, particularly those operating small businesses.
No matter whether it’s bus drivers, ice cream sellers, roast pork hawkers or staff selling bubble tea, their temper is very short and they’re less willing to interact with you.
“Is it just me or does everyone who has visited Singapore feel the same way too?” he asked.
‘Stress the reason for unfriendliness’
While most netizens agreed with the tourist’s observation of Singapore’s service staff in the comment section, they argued that there were several reasons for it.
‘There are a lot of reasons. Unless you become a hawker yourself, you’ll never understand their pain.’
‘There have been many changes lately…price hikes, stress, difficulties in running a business, and the hot weather. Just be a little more understanding.’
On the other hand, some criticised the tourist for generalising the entire country in just one video, saying that it’s was an unfair take.
‘Only one-side (sic) story.’
‘Are you sure they were Singaporean? Did you ask to verify?’
