Being the eldest child is no easy feat as the weight of caring for both the home and younger siblings weighs heavily on one’s shoulders.
A woman recently took to social media to express her dismay over her younger brother’s ungratefulness after she bought him a mobile phone which wasn’t a brand of his personal liking.
Bought cheaper phone for brother
In a Threads post, the OP wrote that she had just graduated and landed a job which paid her RM1,700 monthly.
Around the same time, her 18-year-old brother requested for an iPhone for his birthday, which was well beyond her financial means.
Not wanting to disappoint him on his big day, the OP bought a phone which was more affordable. However, this didn’t sit well with her brother.
Gave phone to friend
The next day, the OP’s brother told her that he had given the newly purchased phone to his friend, adding that it was better for him to do than letting it go to waste.
This undoubtedly left the OP feeling deeply hurt as she never thought she would be “rewarded” in such a manner for her generous act.
“I’m so disappointed. My brother wants to continue his studies, and I need to prepare RM750 for his tuition fees.
“I’m extremely burnt out because I’m also getting married and there are many expenses to cover. I’ve even started selling my clothes and other belongings in hopes of covering these costs,” she wrote.
The OP also said she’s looking to sell her iPad for RM1,500 and pleaded with netizens to help her out as she currently is working a total of four jobs to make ends meet.
Thankfully, she managed to find a person who was willing to purchase the iPad from her.
Criticism
In the comment section, netizens condemned the OP’s brother for his ungratefulness and urged the OP to request for the phone to be returned.
A netizen told the OP that her brother was no longer her responsibility as he’s legally an adult and advised her to cut off all forms of financial support to let him have a taste of how hard it is to earn a living.
