‘Wow, Brilliant!’ — M’sian Borrower Gives Sarcastic Reply When Asked To Settle RM2.5k Debt, Sparks Outrage

Unsettled.
Whenever we borrow money from someone, it’s basic manners to return the cash as soon as possible as it’s not right to owe the debt for a prolonged period of time.

A woman recently took to social media to vent her frustration over how a borrower who, instead of promising to settle a hefty debt, lashed out at her in a tense exchange.

An uncalled for response

In a Threads post, the OP shared a screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation she had with a man who reportedly owed her RM2,500.

Based on the screenshot, she politely asked the man when he was going to settle the remaining amount as she was in urgent need of the cash for a personal matter.

She also asked whether it was possible for him to settle the debt within the same week.

Instead of giving her a time frame, the man became defensive and replied:

Wow, asking me to pay first thing in the morning. Brilliant. What do you need it for anyway?”

This undoubtedly left the OP upset and frustrated, who posed a question often asked by lenders.

“When is the right time to ask for your own money back? You ask in the morning and borrowers claim they are busy working.

“When you ask at night, they say they’re having family time. Some even demand to know why you suddenly need the money back.”

Reactions

Needless to say, netizens were enraged by the borrower’s response and criticised him for acting rudely over a legit question.

One gave an equally biting remark, writing: ‘I asked this morning because I dreamt you died last night. I was worried something might happen to you by midday.’

Another wrote that it was common for borrowers to “play victim” in order to garner sympathy and avoid paying the debt.

Another bluntly wrote that there were two rules when it comes to borrowing money: never lend money, and don’t expect to recover it when the money’s given away.

In an unexpected twist, the OP revealed that the man had apparently caught wind of her post and sent her an angry text message, where he accused her of using backhanded tactics in order to shame him online.

However, she was unfazed by his message, writing: “Next month would be the one-year mark since you borrowed the money. If you were to borrow from loan sharks, can you imagine how much the interest would be?”
