Bonnie Clinches 2nd Gold for M’sia at Paris Paralympics, Smashes World Record With 232kg Lift

Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, Malaysia’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the Paris Paralympics, has made the nation proud once again.

Dominating the Men’s 72kg paralympic powerlifting category, Bonnie not only successfully defended his gold medal but also set a new world record, securing Malaysia’s second gold medal of the Games.

The 25-year-old athlete made a powerful start, lifting 221kg in his first attempt, which was unmatched by any competitor. He then increased the weight to 226kg for his second lift and, in a stunning final attempt, lifted 232kg—breaking his previous world record to claim the gold medal.

China’s Hu Peng took home the silver with a lift of 214kg, while Italy’s Donato Telesca earned the bronze with 213kg.

Bonnie’s previous world record of 231kg was set at the 2023 Dubai World Championships. Additionally, he set the Paralympic record in Tokyo with a lift of 228kg.

This victory marks Malaysia’s second gold medal at the Paris Games and is Bonnie’s return to the top podium since his first gold at Tokyo 2020, further solidifying his place as one of the greatest powerlifters in the world.
