PETALING JAYA – A former composer and musician, Iman Wan, who gave up his dream to take care of his autistic son Adam was forced to move out after his landlord refused to renew the rental agreement due to multiple complaints lodged by his neighbours.
In a lengthy Instagram story on Friday (Feb 11), Iman expressed his disappointment over his neighbours’ lack of understanding over his son’s condition and sarcastically congratulated them for getting his family to relocate.
To our two left and right neighbours […], we know what you did, and we know what kind of people you are.. but no worries.
Your wish has come true. My son will no longer be a nuisance to you anymore. May you have a peaceful and good life after this.
He also added that he fully accepted the landlord’s decision to evict his family as the latter was pressured into doing so.
‘We need to work harder’
In a separate Instagram post, Iman added that he wanted to let families with autistic children to know through his story that not everyone can accept their children for who they are.
“The lack of empathy, compassion, and the inability to accept and understand about autism led to this.
“For the record, Adam is not noisy everyday, and if he did, it’s never from dawn until dust,” he wrote.
He also called for greater compassion and empathy to be shown towards those taking care of autistic family members.
We need to work harder and continue to advocate about autism awareness, acceptance, and understanding.
According to Iman, Adam was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) since he was two years and six months old, forcing Iman to give up his dream of becoming a musician to care for him full-time.
Let’s all be kinder to those with disabilities and their families taking care of them. After all, a little compassion DOES go a long way!
