Walking around in a public space is supposed to be a safe experience. However, there may be times where one might find him/herself becoming the victim of sexual harassment or sexual assault.
An American woman recently caused an uproar among Malaysians after she claimed 50 men tried to sexually assault her in KL, a claim many found unbelievable.
Angmoh claims 50 M’sian men groped her in KL
The woman, a former journalist named Christine Hill, made the claim in response to a viral incident about a foreign couple who experienced assault and rape in India.
In the thread, Christine said that India wasn’t the only place where women would be sexually assaulted, adding that “a white woman walking through Kuala Lumpur can expect to have her breast groped about every two minutes”.
When a netizen voiced disagreement and said that KL was a safe city, Christine refused to back down and went even further with her experience living in KL for eight years.
“Sorry no. I lived there in and off for 8 years and was harassed constantly as were all the other white women I knew. I finally moved to Singapore because I had started being a big umbrella with me and whacking any who grabbed my boobs.
Walking from the Central Market to the Shanghai La one day—traffic was terrible—I whacked about 50 men, all Malay, all tried to grab my breasts. That’s when I realized I had to move.
Christine also said she reported the incident to the authorities but was brushed off as the latter said it was “bad PR”.
If one were to take Christine at her word, it would mean that she was groped every 0.6 minutes over a course of a 30-minute walk — a figure that seems highly impossible.
Netizens call woman out over claim
In the comments, Malaysians were outraged by Christine’s dubious claim and criticised her for spreading misinformation with the intent to damage the country’s reputation.
Despite widespread condemnation, Christine continued to hold firm to her claim and said that “white women” like her often were the victims of sexual harassment in KL.
