Agong Says Mistakes In Displaying Jalur Gemilang Unacceptable, Home Ministry To Probe Sin Chew Daily

Any party failing to adhere to official specifications may face legal action under Act 414.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has strongly criticised the recent inaccurate portrayal of Malaysia’s national flag on the front page of a Sin Chew Daily newspaper, calling it unacceptable and a matter of national concern.

His Majesty stressed that the Jalur Gemilang is a symbol of national identity and sovereignty, and not a decorative object.

It represents the nation’s independence, history, and spirit, and must be flown with pride by all Malaysians, regardless of race,” His Majesty said.

The Agong added that such mistakes could spark public sensitivity, particularly in a multicultural society.

Newspaper under fire for missing crescent in flag

The controversy erupted after Sin Chew Daily published a front-page design on Apr 15 featuring the Malaysian and Chinese flags on a ship to mark Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit.

However, the Malaysian flag was missing the crescent symbol, which represents Islam as the religion of the federation.

The omission triggered widespread backlash from the public and government officials, with many labelling it a serious oversight.

Home Ministry launches official investigation

The Home Ministry (KDN) released an official statement today, confirming that it views the matter seriously.

The ministry has begun an immediate investigation under two acts:

  • Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963 [Act 414]
  • Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 [Act 301]

KDN emphasised that publishing the Jalur Gemilang without the crescent, which symbolises the position of Islam in the federation, is a grave error that should not have occurred.

The ministry stated this not only reflects a lack of professional oversight, but could also cause discord in Malaysia’s multiracial society.

Warning issued over violation of flag standards

KDN reiterated that the Jalur Gemilang is a symbol of sovereignty, unity, and national identity that must be respected.

Any party failing to adhere to official specifications may face legal action under Act 414.

Additionally, the ministry warned that negligence in publications that threaten national peace and public order is punishable under Act 301.

Sin Chew Daily summoned, explanation demanded

KDN further confirmed that it has summoned Sin Chew Daily’s representatives for questioning and issued a show-cause letter to the media outlet.

Investigations are ongoing, and appropriate enforcement action will be taken after the inquiry concludes.

The ministry also stressed that it would not tolerate any attempt to threaten the nation’s stability, harmony, or security, and will continue enforcing all related laws to protect national interests.
