What started off as a walk and a moment of quality time between an elderly man and his grandchild turned into a tragedy after both of their bodies were found floating inside a pond.
Harian Metro reported that their bodies were found inside the pond located near a restaurant in Taman Kempas, Sungai Petani yesterday (Sept 11).
78yo M’sian man & grandchild drown inside pond
Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Zaidy Che Hassan said in a statement that police received a MERS 999 call from a member of the public who found the bodies near the restaurant’s fence at 7.20pm.
The victims were a 78-year-old man and a child aged 1 year and 7 months old.
“A team of officers and personnel from the Tikam Batu police station rushed to the scene and arrived at 7.28pm, where they found both victims floating in the 1-metre deep pond.
“According to an eyewitness, he saw a crowd gathering around the pond before he saw the bodies and made the call,” he said.
Victims were on a evening walk
Zaid added that police interviewed the father of the child who drowned, who told them that the older victim would often take the child for a walk every evening after picking him up from his mother who worked at a nearby restaurant.
“He went out to search for the victims after 7pm and passed by the pond, where he saw a crowd gathering there and his father and child floating inside.
“Police investigation found no elements of foul play in the incident and medical officers pronounced them dead at the scene,” he said.
The bodies were later sent to the Forensic Department of Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH) for a post-mortem.
