While most of us are fortunate enough to enjoy a good paying job and comfortable life, there are those who have to work for low wages and long hours just to feed their families.
A TikTok video recently showed a man who could have retired and live the best life possible but was instead forced to toil away in order to provide for his children.
70yo M’sian man walks 2km to work, earns only RM45 a day
The man’s plight was brought to light in a one-minute TikTok video by welfare activist Saharuddin Amirullah, where he saw the man walking along the busy street in Sandakan, Sabah.
Feeling sorry for him over having to walk all alone, Saharuddin stopped his car by the roadside and greeted the man before handing him a basket containing some rice, cooking oil, and eggs.
However, worried that he wasn’t able to carry all the items by his own, Saharuddin decided to give the man a ride to his home.
During the journey, Saharuddin struck up a conversation with the man and found out that he was actually 70-years-old and walked 2km to work everyday. On top of that, his daily earnings was only a meagre RM45.
I asked whether RM45 a day was enough for him. He shook his head and said that if he doesn’t work, he won’t be able to eat.”
Speaking to mStar about the clip, Saharuddin said the man was forced to walk to work as he didn’t have the funds to afford a bicycle.
“”He doesn’t have a bicycle because he doesn’t have the money to buy one. His children are all girls and aren’t not working as they are still teenagers. It’s pitiful to see him walking every day,” he said.
Netizens express sympathy
The video has since garnered over 163,000 views at the time of writing, along with hundreds of comments from netizens who were saddened by the elderly man’s predicament and prayed for the best for him.
Thankfully, Saharuddin later revealed that someone had agreed to gift a bicycle to the elderly man after the video went viral.
“I’ve found someone willing to give the uncle a new bicycle. The bicycle will be given this week before Eid al-Adha. I hope his story can be an inspiration for Father’s Day as he is still making sacrifices despite his age,” he said.
