A woman found love in the unlikeliest of places when she chose to tie the knot with a man who’s not only disabled, but also 23 years her junior.
The woman, 51-year-old Elya Sudirman, shared how she crossed paths with her future husband, 28-year-old Mohamad Aizat Aiman Halim, and the circumstances that led to marriage.
Met future husband on TikTok
Speaking to Harian Metro, Elya, who came out from her 27-year marriage following a divorce, said she met Aizat on TikTok.
She said Aizat, who went blind in his left eye due to an accident at the age of 11, had been very forthcoming with her regarding his disability, adding that his sincere and honest nature was what attracted her to him.
From the beginning, he told me about his disability but that was never an issue for me as I’m not afraid of remarrying.
“Many men wanted to get close, including married ones, but I chose him because I saw how sincere he was,” she explained.
Had blessing from family
Elya’s children, three of whom are already married, were accepting of Aizat and likewise, Aizat’s mother, who’s just two years older than Elya, also gave her blessing on their relationship — paving the way for marriage on Nov 12, 2023.
“My children are okay with the marriage and can accept my husband as his age is quite close to theirs.
“My husband also knows how to adapt based on the situation. When it’s time to be serious, he’s mature. And he’s also good at winning hearts. Simply put, we’re really ngam (compatible) and most of all, he’s tolerant and helps me a lot with housework,” she said.
Criticism on marriage
As happy as Elya is to be with Aizat, she admits that sometimes she gets hurt by the criticism made by some people.
“Some have asked why I chose him due to his age and disability. But to me, no human is perfect. I believe this is God’s plan, and I pray our marriage lasts until Jannah.”
As for Aizat, he expressed gratefulness for Elya’s acceptance and cited it as the reason why he fell for her.
“Before I met Ekya, I had met other women, but they often rejected me. Thus, rejection became something I grew accustomed to.
“I was cognizant of my weaknesses, but I saw Elya’s sincerity in accepting me as I am. Even before marriage, she came to meet my family. That’s why I fell in love with her and not anyone else,” he said.
