Honking is the most basic way of telling other drivers to watch out or be aware of other cars, but some drivers perceive it as a personal attack and would react angrily.
A woman recently took to Threads to share an unnerving encounter with a driver who was so enraged over being honked at that he flipped the bird at her before chasing her down.
Honked to alert driver
In the post, the OP wrote that she came across a “road bully” who was driving an orange Nissan Navara NP300 VL pickup truck.
She wrote in the caption that she honked at him to alert him of her presence as he had cut into her lane and didn’t appear to know that her car was right next to his.
Instead of thanking or acknowledging the OP, the 4WD driver became extremely angry and flashed the middle finger at her.
To top things off, he allegedly pursued the OP, cut into her lane again and proceeded to hit the left side of her car with his vehicle.
Online reactions
A majority of netizens were aghast by the 4WD driver’s outburst over being honked at when he was clearly in the wrong.
A netizen pointed out that a horn is simply a “safety device” and that honking at other drivers isn’t “a personal attack”.
Some also urged the OP to lodge a police report against the 4WD driver and update them on the outcome.
Under Section 507B of the Penal Code, showing an obscene gesture towards others is an offence and carries a maximum prison sentence of three years, a fine, or both upon conviction.
So the next time you’re tempted to flip the bird, think of the consequences first before reacting!
