Reviewing food or hotels is undeniably an attractive job that most would wish to have as it provides several perks for the reviewer such as free food and accommodation.

However, what was supposed a dream job for a woman turned into a one-way ticket to Heartbreak Hotel after she was cheated of her hard-earned money to a hotel review job scam, reported NST.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the unfortunate victim was a 47-year-old female trader from Rompin, Pahang, who was drawn to a part-time job advertisement on Facebook in October and clicked on the WhatsApp link for more information.

She then came in contact with an unknown person who told her that her sole job was to review hotels and increase their ratings via the Bookingterra application. The person also told her that she would be paid daily once she completes a task.

“Before she could participate in the job scheme, the victim was instructed to pay a deposit, where she proceeded to make a total of 20 transactions totaling RM96,504 into 12 bank accounts.

“When she noticed that none of the promised payments were given to her, she realised it was a scam but it was already too late and was unable to recoup a single cent of her losses,” he said.

Yahaya said the case is now being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and advised the public to invest only in legal platforms and those registered with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and the Securities Commission.

He also called upon them to not be easily lured by similar schemes advertised on social media.
