47yo M’sian man sets parents’ house on fire over cigarettes
Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Asri Shafie told the Malay daily that the 47-year-old suspect was a former convict who was released from prison in June for drug-related offenses.
He added that half and hour before the fire, he became extremely angry with his brother who refused to purchase cigarettes for him.
“Unable to tolerate the suspect’s rage, the brother went to lodge a report at the Kepala Batas police station. On the way there, a neighbour called him and said that the suspect had set the house on fire but was apprehended.
“At the time of the incident, the suspect’s mother was at Balik Pulau visiting her daughter,” he said.
The fire destroyed 95% of the house, including four motorcycles and all of the family’s belongings. A neighbour’s house wall was also caught in the inferno as well.
Tested positive for meth
Mohd Asri said the suspect later admitted to the act, where he revealed that he had set the curtains in his bedroom on fire with a lighter until the whole house burnt down.
“Urine tests revealed that he tested positive for methamphetamine and he had 14 previous criminal records.
“He has since been remanded to aid investigations under Section 436 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire.”
