Every person who is recognised to be a legitimate citizen of Malaysia will be issued an identification card (IC) to prove that they are eligible to the privileges and protection offered by the Constitution.
One woman who tried to game the system by providing inaccurate info to the authorities while applying for an IC for a young boy found herself in deep trouble and RM6,000 poorer as a result.
42yo M’sian woman fined RM6K for giving false info for boy’s IC application
Utusan reported that the woman in question was 42-year-old K. Kalaivani, a housewife who was brought to the Bahau Magistrate’s Court today over providing false information for a boy’s IC application last year.
According to the charge sheet, Kalaivani allegedly submitted a birth certificate containing false information about the boy’s birth mother at the National Registration Department (JPN) in the Jempol on March 9, 2022.
The offense is punishable under Regulation 25(1)(b) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007), which carries an imprisonment for up to three years or a fine not exceeding RM20,000, or both if convicted.
Kalaivani pleaded guilty after the charge was read before Magistrate Norshazwani Ishak.
The prosecution, which was led by JPN Deputy Public Prosecutor Abdul Hilmi Muzhafar Hamsan, asked the court to mete out an appropriate sentence on the basis that citizenship was the highest honor bestowed by the government on eligible individuals.
M. Yogamani, who represented Kalaivani, requested for a lenient sentence, saying that his client had admitted guilt and took responsibility for her actions.
He also added that she wasn’t well-versed in the laws regarding child adoption and that she gave the false information out of affection and compassion for the child.
In the end, Kalaivani was slapped with a RM6,000 fine and had a 10-day jail sentence imposed on her if she failed to pay the fine.
