Getting promoted to a supervisor at 25 may sound like a career milestone, but for one Malaysian woman, the new role has turned into a source of daily stress.
The woman shared online that despite being officially in charge of her department, she often feels like her staff do not take her authority seriously.
Promoted after 3 years at the company
According to Tantannews, the 25-year-old had been working at the company for three years before her former supervisor resigned.
As her work performance had consistently been good, she was eventually promoted to take over the position.
Her department consists of six employees, including three male colleagues who are more than 10 or even 20 years older than her.
When she first became their supervisor, she deliberately tried to remain polite and approachable as she did not want to appear arrogant just because she had been promoted.
However, she soon began wondering whether being too easygoing had backfired.
I don’t know if it’s because I’m too easy to talk to, but the tasks I assign are often delayed.”
Staff allegedly ignored her decisions
She said there were also occasions where she had already made a decision, only for her staff to discuss it with more senior colleagues and eventually do something completely different from what she had instructed.
During one meeting, she proposed changing an existing work process.
However, one senior employee responded by saying that things had never been done that way before.
Other colleagues then began agreeing with him, and the meeting eventually turned into a discussion among them while she sat and listened.
She also noticed that whenever her staff encountered problems, they would sometimes approach the supervisor from another department instead of asking her.
“I know they probably think the other supervisor has more experience, but it feels really bad. It’s like I don’t even exist as their supervisor,” she said.
Started questioning whether she is suited for the role
The situation has reportedly left her feeling anxious about going to work every day.
Despite holding the highest position within the department, she said she sometimes feels like she is the person with the least say.
The experience has also made her question whether she is actually suited to being a supervisor.
