A 1-year-old baby lost his life after he was struck by a falling Casuarina tree at Pantai Puteri in Tanjong Kling yesterday (Nov 13).
He died at around 12.38am today while receiving treatment at the Melaka Hospital, reported Bernama.
Struck by falling tree
According to Melaka Tengah district police chief ACP Christopher Patit, the victim Mohd Zafran Ilman Mohd Sazwan was being carried by his mother when the tree fell.
He added that the family came all the way from Kajang, Selangor for a vacation and were staying at a resort.
“While the mother was carrying her baby and walking towards the beach, the tree suddenly fell and hit both of them.
“An eyewitness told us that the mother’s head was buried in the sand while the baby was flung into a thicket of leaves and tree branches,” he said in a statement.
Members of the public quickly rushed to dig the mother’s head out from the sand.
She suffered injuries to her body while the 1-year-old baby was unconscious and was believed to have severe head injuries.
Christopher added that both victims were given initial treatment by the Civil Defence Force (APM) before they were sent to the Melaka Hospital.
