12yo M’sian Girl Asks For Job At Convenience Store So She Could Earn Money During School Holidays

"The moral of the story is that kids these days are ahead of their time."
During our primary school days, all we needed to worry about was completing our homework on time so that we could go out and play with our friends without a care in the world.

A local man recently took to social media to share a brief but amusing exchange he had with a primary school student who was looking to earn extra money at such a tender age.

When they came to the counter to pay, he noticed they were in their school uniforms and asked whether they had classes, to which one of them replied that they just had co-curricular activities.

He then inquired their age and was told that one of the girls was 12 years old and was about to turn 13 soon.

Before I could say anything, she added: ‘Abang, can I work here during the school holidays?’

“I was surprised. Internally, I found it amusing but also admirable at the same time. When I told her that she had to be at least 18 years old, she sighed, causing me to chuckle lightly,” he wrote.

Towards the end of the post, @msnbr penned out the key takeaway he had gleaned from his conversation with the girl:

“The moral of the story is that kids these days are ahead of their time. At 12 years old, they’re already thinking about working and earning money. This is proof that they’re not as lazy as some people claim.

“I’m sorry, dik, that I couldn’t recommend you for the job. I hope that you find a good job one day. Enjoy your childhood while it lasts. I’m proud of you for thinking ahead as not all kids your age think like you do.”

‘This was me back then when I was 11. I helped my grandfather in displaying flags during the General Election as I could earn RM50 a day. Over time, I managed to earn RM150.’

‘My friend is a secondary school teacher who takes care of the last class. A lot of his students worked part-time after school and during the holidays. There were some whose parents didn’t care what they were up to so they had to find money for their school fees and personal expenses. It was sad to hear.’

Another lamented that it was “pitiful” to see students having to work at such a young age, adding that it was the reason why some kids were more matured than the adults.
