IPOH – The Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) between Malaysia and Singapore has brought many families back together after two years of separation and allowed them to meet during Chinese New Year (CNY).
One of them was a young woman named Xiao Hui, who posted a video of her reuniting with her family in an unusual manner on the fifth day of Chinese New Year.
Xiao Hui, who comes from Ipoh, told WeirdKaya that she has been working in Singapore as a sales support for 13 years and had not met her parents for more than two years.
Thus, she devised a plan with her brother Yi Shun to give her parents the best reunion surprise by disguising herself as his girlfriend.
‘Who is this?’
The video began with Xiao Hui’s journey back home and she put on a cap and mask to hide her face before meeting her mother in the kitchen.
Upon seeing Xiao Hui, her mother asked who she was and she replied, “I’m Yi Shun’s girlfriend.”
Confused by her answer, Xiao Hui’s mother kept asking “Who is this?” and requested her to take off her mask.
To avoid spoiling the surprise, Xiao Hui tried cueing her father but couldn’t find him. In that split second, she decided to change her strategy and told her mother, “Didn’t Yi Shun tell you about me?” but this only left her all the more puzzled.
After a few rounds of incessant probing, Xiao Hui’s father finally emerged from the washroom and recognised his daughter at first sight.
However, her mother was still clueless and asked her husband, “Who is this? Ah Shun’s girlfriend?”
It wasn’t until she saw Xiao Hui hugging her father that she finally burst into tears and embraced her daughter tightly after Xiao Hui removed her cap.
Moved to tears
The video has since garnered 40k reactions, 2.3k comments and 10k shares as of writing time.
