M’sian Woman Rents Out Apartment To Needy Tenant, Gets Shocked By Its Filthy State 1 Year Later

"It's better to be poor in wealth than be poor in manners."
What was meant to be an act of kindness turned into a nightmare for a woman in Cheras after renting out her clean apartment to a financially struggling tenant — only to get it back filthy, stinking, and badly damaged a year later.

According to a viral Threads post, the woman named Nazreen shared that sister had rented out herTaman Ratu apartment in Cheras to a 35-year-old woman, with the rent covered by Baitulmal funds as part of a welfare assistance programme.

However, when the tenant moved out after a year, the condition of the unit shocked the family.

Covered In dirt and grime

Photos shared online showed thick black grime covering every corner of the home — from the kitchen to the bedroom and toilet.

The sink was filled with leftover food waste, the walls were full of scribbles and stains, the toilet bowl turned dark with hardened urine stains, and even the ceiling fan blades were coated in black dust.

I couldn’t stay silent. My sister rented out her apartment to help a poor tenant, but after a year, it looks like an abandoned house.

“The floor is covered in dust, the walls are full of graffiti, the kitchen reeks, and the toilet is disgusting. Things are broken, the water pipe burst, and the sink is filled with food remains. It looks like no one has lived there for years,” she lamented.

Nazreen added that the tenant also left behind over RM700 in unpaid utility bills, including electricity and water, which led to the water supply being cut off.

Painted, cleaned the house before renting it out

Nazreen said her sister had handed over a freshly painted and cleaned unit at the start of the rental period. Yet now, she has to bear the cost of repainting, plumbing repairs, and even scrubbing the toilet to remove the filth left behind.

“She painted and cleaned everything before renting it out. Now she can’t even step into the house without feeling disgusted.”

Nazreen then concluded the with a Malay proverb:

Biar miskin harta, jangan miskin adab’ — Better to be poor in wealth than be poor in manners.

She hoped that the incident would remind tenants, especially those receiving aid, to respect other people’s property and maintain basic cleanliness, regardless of their financial situation.
