A woman in Singapore was left disgusted after she saw a mother change her son’s soiled diapers inside a food court while other people were having their meal.
The incident was later shared to the Facebook group Complaint Singapore and elicited a wave of outrage from netizens.
Woman changes her son’s diapers in front of other diners
In an interview with Mothership, Charminn Ngiam said the incident took place on Nov 29 between 7:30pm and 8pm at the Kopitiam food court at VivoCity.
When she turned her eyes to the middle of the food court, she saw a woman changing her son’s diapers and using wet wipes to clean his rear — all while other patrons were eating.
At one point, the woman even opened her son’s rear wider so that she could clean it more thoroughly.
Alerted floor manager
Totally shocked by what she saw, Ngiam said she took a photo of the woman and immediately told a stall vendor about the incident, who then went to call for the floor manager.
Upon arriving at the scene minutes later, the floor manager “firmly” told the woman to not clean her son’s rear in public.
However, she had already put the wet wipes away and put her son’s shoes back on, although he remained half-naked.
She was closely watched by the floor manager, who stood at a distance to ensure that she didn’t continue cleaning her son.
Didn’t wash her hands
Ngiam also told Mothership that she observed that the woman didn’t wash her hands after changing the diapers but suggested that she might have cleaned her hands with the wet wipes.
She also added that “the entire area smelled like faecal matter.”
When asked why she didn’t confront the woman, Ngiam said she felt she wasn’t in the position to do so, adding that the mall’s management had “higher authority”.
Netizens express outrage
In the comment section, netizens condemned the woman for her lack of consideration for other patrons at the food court as well as her poor hygiene practices.
However, one seemed to rush to the woman’s defense, saying that the food court didn’t have any toilets nearby, adding that the nearest one was either located 100m away or a floor above.
