Who can protect us from our 'protectors'?

PETALING JAYA: Yesterday, netizen Sabi Yusof took to Twitter to share her story of being sexually harassed by a police officer who forced her to undress her upper body or receive a summon as she was not wearing a bra. She said she still remains shaken to this day over the incident.

According to the post, the incident happened at a roadblock at Jalan Duta, when Yusof realized she had forgotten her bra. This inevitably caught the officer’s eye, who told her to pull over and said, “Seriously you are not wearing a bra? Undress and show me now or else I will give you a summon”. The officer also insisted on getting her contact number despite her protests.

I was sexually harrassed by a police during a roadblock at Jalan Duta today. I’m still shaken about it. Police sepatutnya melindungi rakyat bukan buat macamni. Dahlah kena sexually harrased, paksa bagi number pulak tu, kalau tak ugut nak saman. Babi gila kuasa— sabi what is this behaviour (@sabiyusof) February 12, 2021

Yusof said that she tried calling a hotline to file an integrity report but to no avail. Hence, she lodged a police report and shared her encounter to raise public awareness and warn others to be on the lookout for such officers. The post has garnered 9.6k likes, 240 comments and 11.2k retweets as of 3.30 pm today.

Lembah Pantai Member of Parliament (MP) Fahmi Fadzil called upon the authorities to launch an investigation into the matter, saying that it was a serious allegation.

“This is a severe accusation. Police need to investigate and confirm this. The Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Rina Mohd Harun should play her part too.”

Apparently, this is not the first time police officers have been found to display such questionable tactics at roadblocks, ranging from requesting contact numbers to verbal harassment. Another netizen named Azie also complained on Twitter about a police officer who messaged her on WhatsApp, saying that he wanted to “know her better” after getting her number.
