A mysterious “gravity hill” phenomenon in Malaysia has left netizens in awe after a viral video showed a water bottle rolling uphill instead of downwards on a sloped road.
The video, widely shared on social media, features a few motorcyclists testing out the weird phenomenon at a slope.
Bottle rolls uphill instead of down
In the video, a motorcyclist is seen placing a water bottle on the sloped road.
Defying expectations and seemingly the laws of gravity, the bottle rolled uphill, prompting astonished comments from viewers who described the scene as “unbelievable” and “magical.”
The location of this peculiar slope is said to be near the foothills of Genting Highlands, along the Karak Highway.
Many who witnessed the phenomenon expressed disbelief, asking, “What kind of extraordinary force is this?”
“Gravity Hill Phenomenon”
Experts, however, explain that this so-called “gravity hill” or “magnetic hill” is actually a well-documented optical illusion.
The layout of the surrounding area creates a visual distortion, making a slight downhill slope appear to be uphill. As a result, objects like water bottles, or even vehicles, appear to “roll uphill.”
The main cause of this illusion is an incomplete view of the horizon, which leaves observers without sufficient visual references to accurately gauge the incline of the road.
Trees, buildings, or other objects that are expected to stand vertically may actually be tilted, further misleading the observer’s perception.
Such gravity hills are not unique to Malaysia, as there are hundreds of similar sites recognized worldwide.
On these slopes, objects like cars can appear to move uphill without any human intervention, purely due to the optical illusion caused by the terrain and surrounding landscape.
While science provides a logical explanation, the “gravity hill” near Genting Highlands continues to amaze visitors, solidifying its status as a must-see curiosity for both locals and tourists.
