For many tourists, KL is a city that’s full of bustling streets, bright lights, and a melting pot of culture that continues to attracts millions of visitors each year.
Behind these however, is an aspect that has long been a sore point for both locals and tourists alike: the lack of walkability and safety for pedestrians.

‘Like a survival game’
In a TikTok video posted by a European tourist, she started off by saying how much she loved Malaysia’s food and the friendliness its citizens showed towards her during her visit.
She then went on to pose a question regarding walkability in KL, saying: “Why does walking in KL feel like a survival game?”
She added that even when there are roads for people to cross, it doesn’t seem to appear that way as cars will still drive on at breakneck speeds and not stop for pedestrians.

The tourist also equated her walking experience to that of Squid Game, the hit Netflix TV series where contestants play childhood games at the risk of losing their lives at any given moment.
She also mentioned that as a European, she’s quite accustomed to walking to nearby places but found it extremely difficult to do the same in KL.
“I’m fighting for my life on these roads,” she quipped before asking Malaysians the reason for her experience.
Responses
In the comment section, Malaysians were quick to point out that the main reason was due to KL being built as a car-centric city and not for pedestrians.

Another said the hot weather and extremely cheap fuel prices are what dissuades Malaysians from walking.

Meanwhile, another said that not only are tourists struggling to survive by walking in KL, but locals too.

@verasplot I think walking around the city is the BEST way to actually experience it – feel the vibe, the energy, see how people live, explore – so I really wish I can walk more in KL but I’m so scared 😭 #kualalumpur ♬ original sound – verasplot
