Recently, the rise of micro-mobility vehicles, such as electric scooters, skateboards, and street luges, has added a new dimension to traffic management and road safety.
As mentioned, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is currently investigating a concerning incident involving an individual riding a street luge (a downhill longboard) through traffic, which reportedly occurred on Jalan Tun Sardon, Penang.
The case came to light following the viral spread of a video posted by a TikTok user, which captured the risky behaviour.
In the 47-seconds clip, the person dressed entirely in white is seen lying down on the street luge while descending the hill amidst moving traffic.
Daringly, the individual even sits up and extends their arms, further demonstrating their reckless behaviour.
The video, shared by @shahmichaell, has quickly gone viral, amassing over 500,000 views and thousands of comments from concerned netizens.
In response, the police have called on anyone with information about this incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.
According to Sinar Harian, the Southwest District Police Chief, Superintendent Kamarul Rizal Jenal, has urged members of the public with relevant information to contact the Southwest Police Operations Room at 04-8664122 or reach out to the investigating officer, Inspector Noor Amera Mohd Nawi, at 013-3312026.
“The police take this matter very seriously as the individual’s actions pose a significant risk to themselves and other road users,” Superintendent Kamarul Rizal stated in a press release on Saturday.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 3(1) of the Road Traffic (Micro-Mobility Vehicle Usage Prohibition) Rules 2021.
