Do you still remember how hard it was to carry a bag full of textbooks to school? We’re sure many of you have experienced a sore back and neck from lugging all those books all day. Some have even resorted to taking an extra bag as there isn’t any space left!
Yesterday (May 3), an Instagram influencer, who is also a mother of two, published several IG stories ranting about how heavy the bag was for her 7-year-old son.
At the beginning of the video, she places her son’s bag on the weighing scale, and it showed that the bag weighed 5.5kg.
“It is almost as if my child is carrying a bag of rice to school every day!”
She then explains how carrying such a heavy bag might be detrimental to a child’s growth and said that it could be why Malaysian males are generally short in stature.
“I don’t know why a Standard One student needs to bring all the textbooks to school except for the moral textbook.”
“Why can’t the teacher let them know in advance which books to bring?”
She also suggested that the school install lockers for students to keep their books instead of carrying them everywhere.

The lady also lodged a complaint to the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and received a reply from them today (May 4), who informed her that the school had already arranged for older students and volunteer parents to help younger students with their bags.
However, she was dissatisfied with their solution and argued that the goal should be to reduce the weight of the bag and not have others chip in and help carry it.
A portion of her video was uploaded on a Facebook group, sparking a rather heated discussion in the process.
Several netizens commented that the woman should arrange the textbooks according to the timetable so that her son would not need to bring everything.
Others thought she was spoiling her child and shared their own experience in carrying heavy school bags, claiming that it wasn’t a big deal.
Some also pointed out that she should be more polite when bringing out the issue.
There were also netizens that defended her and agree that it could pose problem for the child’s wellbeing when the bag get too heavy,
WeirdKaya tried reaching out to the woman for comment but did not receive a response.
What do you think regarding the issue? Do you think carrying a heavy bag should be part of the primary school experience? Or should schools find a solution to fix the problem? Tell us in the comments below!
