For many Malaysians who grew up watching Hong Kong dramas, Benz Hui was practically part of the living room.

Also known as Hui Siu-hung, he spent more than 50 years in the entertainment industry and became one of TVB’s most trusted veteran actors.

He wasn’t always the lead, but he consistently stole the scene, whether he was acting as a mentor, a funny uncle, a calm underworld figure or a police officer.

Among his most memorable roles were:

  • Chum Foon Hei in Line Walker — a fan-favourite character Malaysian viewers still quote today
  • Chu Pak Keung in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
  • Well-loved supporting roles in dramas like You’re Hired and countless TVB classics

His appearance in almost every major drama through the 80s, 90s and 2000s made him one of the most recognisable character actors across Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong.

According to The Standard Hong Kong, Hui was born into a well-connected Guangzhou family. His father, Hui Chor-fung, was closely associated with Hong Kong’s old business elite.

Despite his background, he chose to build a career in showbiz — eventually becoming one of TVB’s most dependable veterans.

Benz Hui leaves behind a wife and daughter.

Colleagues and fans across Asia have been paying tribute, remembering him as a warm, humble and extremely professional actor.
