Foreign Student Faces Expulsion From Universiti Malaya For Wearing Shorts To The Library

He was yelled at by security and had his ID card confiscated.
A foreign student from China is facing the risk of getting kicked out from Universiti Malaya after he reportedly wore shorts to the library.

The incident was brought to light by University of Malaya Association of New Youth (UMANY) in a lengthy Instagram post, where further details about what took place were revealed.

Violated UM’s dress code by wearing shorts

According to the post, UMANY alleged that the student was shouted at by security when he left the library in a pair of shorts. Aside from that, he was filmed and had his identification card taken away from him.

Although the student tried to defuse the situation by covering his legs with long sleeves, he was still being treated “rudely”. To make matters worse, he now faces being potentially expelled from UM after the staff threatened to report the incident to his faculty.

While UMANY acknowledged that the student had broken the rules by wearing shorts, it argued that “the focus of the incident should not be on what the student wore but rather on the aggressive behavior of the security staff.”

The student rights organisation also said that UM’s dress code had given too much power to its staff in determining and enforcing what constitutes as “inappropriate attire”.

‘Get rid of the dress code’

UMANY went on to say that it will continue to do all it can to see that UM abolishes its dress code, adding that the university’s “multicultural values will face continual erosion” if the dress code remains in place.

If the administration truly wants to cultivate critical thinkers, it must create a free, open, and diverse campus.

“As long as we do not disrupt public order or infringe on anyone‘s rights, we should have the freedom to express ourselves,” it wrote.

Ever since UM introduced the dress code back in April, it was met with fierce opposition from various student associations, reported NST.
