‘Uncle Roger’ apologises on Weibo after featuring YouTuber who criticised China

"I hope you can give 'Uncle Roger', who has just entered China, a chance to improve!", writes Nigel Ng.

MALAYSIA – The Malaysian comedian behind “Uncle Roger” has recently taken to social media and apologised to his Chinese fans on Weibo. This move comes after his latest video featuring a YouTuber, Strictly Dumpling who has voiced criticism of the Chinese government.

On January 10th, Nigel Ng posted a collaboration with Mike Chen of the “Strictly Dumpling” channel on his Youtube channel commenting a dumpling recipe video. He quickly removed the YouTube video on the next day and issued an official statement on Weibo, a Twitter-like social media platform in China.

As per the statement, Nigel Ng apologised for making a “bad social impact ” and urge everyone to “stop reposting the content related to the video”. He also reiterated that he is Asian who grew up in Malaysia and loves China Culture. He further commented that this is also the main reason he started his YouTube channel.

“My staff and I would like to express our sincerest apologies to everyone. Considering the seriousness…we discussed internally and decided to take it down from all platforms”, Nigel Ng wrote.

According to HKFP, Mike Chen has often criticised the Chinese government on Twitter, voicing concern over the treatment of Uighur minorities as well as opposition to the controversial Hong Kong National Security Law.
