A UK photographerโs Instagram post has recently stirred up quite the buzz in Malaysia, where he claimed to have seen cat meat being sold along an alley at Petaling Street.
The post, which was uploaded yesterday (Jan 6), has since garnered over 8,000 likes and hundreds of comments calling for the authorities to take action.
Cat meat allegedly being sold at Petaling Street
According to the post, the photographer named Ragib Choudhury said he, out of sheer curiosity, decided to explore a sketchy-looking alley in Chinatown that tourists usually give a miss.
His cousin wasnโt up for the adventure and declined to follow along, causing Ragib to venture on the adventure alone.
While walking along the alley, he found was seemed like something straight out of a National Geographic special โ a hidden market bustling with life, selling everything from fruits to veggies.
But there was another kind of produce which caught his eye.
Ragib said he spotted cages with kittens inside, and though one of them had the sign with the words โThese are my pets, not foodโ written on it, what he saw next was hard to shake off from his mind.

I then saw a lady who was dressed what felt like a Bond villain (she looked v cool tbf) go up to the counter and there right in front of me the lady butcher cut up the cat meat.

โThey both then started looking at me, as I tried to discreetly take my last photos. All I knew was that I had to, and wanted to get out of this place quickly,โ he wrote.
While Ragib managed to get out from the seedy location, he said the experience was rather harrowing, adding that he โnever felt so unsettled in his lifeโ before.
Netizens horrified
In the comment section, netizens were outraged by Ragibโs claims of cat meat being sold and called upon the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to investigate the allegations.

Public figures and celebrities, like Yaya Zahir, have also lent their voices to the chorus of concern.

โI wish I never saw thisโฆ this is so heartbreaking.โ

However, there were some who expressed skepticism, saying that the meat was most likely pork, not cat meat.

WeirdKaya has contacted both Ragib and the Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) to seek their comments on the matter but have yet to receive a response at press time.
