Whenever we’re given a traffic summon, we would often grumble and drag our feet in paying the fine as it poses a lot of inconvenience.
However, it seems that this bad habit of ours is rapidly racking up to billions of Ringgit and spanning across several decades.
Over RM6.53bil in traffic summonses unpaid since 1990
As per a report by NST, it has been found that a staggering amount of over RM6.53 billion in traffic summonses have yet to be paid.

According to Federal Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, he said that based on police records between 1990 and Nov 6, 2024, 135.91 million summonses worth RM20.38 billion were registered.
“67% of these summonses have already been settled, while 43.59 million traffic fines worth RM6.53 billion have yet to be paid,” he said during a visit to the Tun HS Lee Traffic Police Station.
Mohd Yusri said that between Jan and Nov 6, a total of over 4.3 million summonses worth RM646.19 million were recorded, where a majority of them were for obstructing traffic and ignoring traffic signs.
“In KL alone, 881,211 summonses were issued during the same time period. This figure is rather high given the fact that we (the police) have been conducting traffic operations.

Mohd Yusri urged those with outstanding summonses to quickly settle them, adding that police are looking into offering more discounts and holding campaigns in other districts.
Currently, the KL traffic police is offering a 50% discount on traffic summonses until Saturday (Nov 9):
