Exploring a new country can sometimes prove to be a challenge due to language barriers, but it’s equally as frustrating when one party simply refuses to make the situation less complicated.
A foreign tourist who visited Penang back in September was forced to deal with a rude waiter who kept insisting that he sat outside the restaurant despite his numerous attempts to order a cup of nutmeg juice.
Tried ordering nutmeg juice 3 times
In the 27-minute long video posted on YouTube last month, the tourist named Carlos was walking around Chulia Street when he decided to have a meal at a restaurant.
He also spent a few moments looking at the drinks menu, which had a brief notice written below it stating that those who didn’t order a drink will have to pay RM2 and that no outside drinks were allowed.
Carlos eventually decided to order nutmeg juice and tried to do so from one of the workers, but he shook his head and said that he didn’t speak English.
He then tried to order it from another female worker but she feigned ignorance and told another person to attend to him. Seeing that his attempts weren’t working, Carlos sat at a table and munched on his banh mi while waiting for someone to take his order.

Eventually, a young waiter clad in a blue t-shirt approached him and asked what drink he had ordered, to which Carlos replied by saying he had tried ordering nutmeg juice three times.
Instead of patiently listening to him, the waiter told him to sit outside as he didn’t order a drink from the restaurant. As Carlos tried explaining to him, the waiter became a little aggressive and said that he “didn’t care”.
At that point, Carlos lost the last bit of his patience and told the waiter that he was “really rude” before pointing out to him that he wanted the nutmeg juice.
To his annoyance, the waiter told him that the nutmeg juice had sold out, prompting Carlos to retort, “Why didn’t you tell me? Instead you’re really rude!”
Eventually, Carlos settled for a cup of ampula juice and couldn’t help but express his frustration over the affair, exclaiming, “How rude he was! I said nutmeg juice…oh God, what was (he) thinking?”
Thankfully, both parties parted amicably as the waiter later gave Carlos back his change after he paid for the drink and apologised to him.
Mixed reactions
In the comment section, netizens were split in determining who was the rude party in the incident.
Some were embarrassed by the waiter’s response and apologised to Carlos for the unpleasant encounter.
On the other hand, some felt that Carlos had gone a bit too far in shaming the waiter, saying that it was nothing more than a misunderstanding.
