Selected top Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia students will have their undergraduate tuition fees waived at public universities under a new sponsorship initiative starting this year.
According to The Sun, the initiative will also benefit the 18 students who were recognised as the top scorers in the 2025 STPM examination.
Public universities to sponsor top STPM students
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced the initiative during the STPM Top Students, Malaysian University English Test and Malay Language Proficiency Certificate for Foreign Nationals awards ceremony.
She said the tuition fee waiver reflects the commitment of public universities in helping high achieving STPM candidates gain better access to higher education.
Fadhlina also thanked all public universities for supporting the initiative.
I extend my deepest appreciation to all public universities for this commitment. If possible, we hope to expand this further in the future,” she said.
Hopes to expand the initiative further
At the same time, Fadhlina said the ministry hopes the initiative can be expanded in the coming years so that more students can benefit from it.
“If this year it is one, next year we hope it can be five if possible.
“InshaAllah, all these are efforts to continuously encourage our students and ensure that their access to education can be continued at degree level,” she said.
Meanwhile, NST reported that the 18 top national achievers include seven students from the Science stream, seven from the Social Science stream, one Orang Asli student and three students with special educational needs.
The report also stated that public universities whose vice chancellors are council members would offer sponsorships in the form of undergraduate tuition fee waivers to the 18 top national achievers.
Parents also played an important role
Fadhlina also expressed her appreciation to parents, saying their support and encouragement played an important role in shaping the students’ success.
She said the achievements of top STPM candidates were not only the result of the students’ hard work, but also the continuous support they received from their families.
She added that STPM remains one of the strongest pathways for students to pursue higher education in Malaysia.
For many students, the examination continues to serve as a solid route into the pre university education system, while opening up opportunities for academic progression at degree level.
