Thai Woman, Accused Of RM7,200 Unpaid Bill, Has Hair Shaved Off By Bar Manager

Forced hairdo.
A bar manager in Thailand is now at the forefront of public outrage after a viral clip showed him ridding the hair off a woman’s head over an unpaid tab.

In the clip, it showed the bar manager using a shaver to cut off the woman’s hair, leaving her completely bald.

The woman was then sent to the police station, where she was accused of leaving a 60,000 baht (approx. RM7,200) bill unpaid.

Chain of events

The incident was first brought to light by Chalida Phalamat of the Pen Nueng Foundation, who revealed further details of the incident, reported Bangkok Post.

According to Chalida, the woman had allegedly used a fake ID card to enter the bar on Aug 25 and didn’t have the money to pay the bill.

On top of that, she was accused of skipping out on bills at other establishments.

Thus, the manager reportedly made the woman sign an agreement that would see her selling her hair, which was to be cut from root to tip, for 3,000 baht (approx. RM364).

Slammed hair-cutting

While Chalida expressed sympathy for the bar’s financial losses and understood the manager’s need to be responsible towards employees, she said shaving the woman’s hair was “excessive and unlawful”.

She also slammed the manager for taking matters into his own hands instead of filing a police report.

As for the agreement, Chalida expressed doubts over whether the woman had truly “consented” to having her hair cut off for donation as her hair had already been cut short prior to the incident.

Chalida said the manager had told her he would contact the woman’s family to offer an apology and compensations.

She also urged the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security to check on the woman’s welfare as there were questions over her age, adding that it was unclear whether the woman was suffering from mental issues.

Woman’s mother disputes bar’s account

Meanwhile, the woman’s mother has stepped forward to dispute the bar’s account of events, claiming that her offer of paying the bill in instalments was rejected by the bar.

She also alleged that her daughter was a victim of physical violence as there were bruises on her body, adding that she plans to file a police report at Bang Yai Khan police station on Aug 28.
