Low wages and underemployment continue to be hot topics in Malaysia, and one lecturer’s story has recently gone viral for highlighting just how bad the situation can get.
In a viral Threads post, a 28-year-old Malaysian lecturer revealed that despite holding a degree and teaching at a private higher education institution (IPTS) in Terengganu, his monthly salary is only RM1,200 with no EPF contribution.

The lecturer, who described himself as a degree holder working full-time, expressed frustration over the pay: “I only get RM1,200 per month with no EPF contribution. Feels so stupid, right?”
Netizens couldn’t believe it
The revelation quickly gained attention, with many netizens expressing disbelief that a lecturer could be paid less than an intern:
One user remarked that their internship allowance was higher than RM1,200, underlining how unusual it was for a lecturer to be paid less than a trainee.
‘RM1,200? My internship allowance is higher than that.’

Others questioned the institution itself, asking which IPTS in Terengganu could be offering such wages.
‘Which IPTS in Terengganu pays like this? Seriously underpaid.’

Some also highlighted how unfair it was for a 28-year-old degree holder to earn below Malaysia’s minimum wage.
[28 years old and only RM1,200? That’s way below the minimum wage. My intern allowance is already much bigger than yours. Hope you’ll find better opportunities, bro.’
