A total of 12 locals were arrested by police for allegedly committing a gang robbery of a Taiwanese YouTuber while impersonating as police officers in Cheras.
NST reported that police were alerted of the matter after a Japanese man, an employee of the YouTuber, filed a police report on Aug 1.
In the report, he claimed that the YouTuber was injured following an assault and robbed of RM35,000 at EkoCheras Service Residence.
According to Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus, he said the robbery was triggered by the suspects’ knowledge that the victim was keeping a substantial amount of cash in foreign currency.
12 arrested
Since Aug 2, police have been on the hunt for the suspects and managed to arrest eight men and four women, aged between 26 and 48, in a series of raids across Selangor, Negri Sembilan, and Kuala Lumpur.
Five suspects have been remanded until Aug 13, while seven were released on police bail on Aug 7 after having their statements recorded.
Police are currently searching for one more suspect who is still on the run.
The case is being investigated under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a public servant and Section 395 for gang robbery, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping.
