Early on a Wednesday morning, a powerful earthquake hit Taiwan, causing significant damage.
A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck near Taiwan’s eastern coast at 7:58 am local time (23:58 GMT), impacting not just Taipei but also reaching southern Japan, eastern China, and the Philippines.
The earthquake’s impact was felt all over Taiwan, with one building in Hualien badly hurt, leaning to one side.
In Taipei, the capital, some older buildings lost tiles, and trains all over the island stopped running for a while. However, life in Taipei quickly went back to normal.
It was so strong that even Kinmen Island, near China, felt it.
The quake caused a tsunami warning in Japan, expecting waves up to 3 meters high, but the actual waves were much smaller.
This earthquake is considered one of the biggest for Taiwan since 1999.
Taiwan is located on the “Ring of Fire,” an area with a lot of earthquakes because of its position on the Earth’s tectonic plates.
