Many companies often hold annual dinners to thank employees for their hard work as well as “motivate” them to perform even better in the months ahead. However, not everyone is a fan of annual dinners and would prefer to be appreciated in another form.
One boss in Taiwan decided to “convert” his company’s annual dinner into angpaos for his workers after they told him that they were “tired” of attending annual dinners.
Taiwan boss gives each worker RM1.5k angpao
In a Facebook post dated Jan 16, Lu Shaonan (transliteration), who goes by the online moniker of Nan Ge Ge, explained the reason behind giving his workers an angpao of NT10,000 (RM1,500) each.

According to him, his workers felt extremely stressed out whenever they had to dine with stakeholders and some of them also felt awkward as it was their first time coming in contact with the stakeholders.
Additionally, he said some of his workers felt that there was no point attending annual dinners as a majority of them believed they won’t be able to snag big prizes at the lucky draw.
Preferred money over food
Lu said he then consulted with his workers, who told him that they would rather be given cash than attending dinners.
As such, he decided to scrap annual dinners for good starting this year, adding that he did it for the benefit of his workers.
I also think that by slowly turning the workplace into one that everyone enjoys is a good thing.

‘Got vacancy?’
It didn’t take long for the post to go viral, where it has since amassed over 90,000 likes and 2,300 comments.
Many praised Lu for looking out for the welfare of his employees and his generosity.

Some also jokingly asked whether there were vacancies at Lu’s company, where he cheekily replied, “You’re more than welcome to submit your resume to 104.”

For the uninitiated, 104 refers to 104 Corporation, a job portal platform in Taiwan.
