Popular Japanese restaurant chain Sushi Tei dropped a bombshell on Malaysians by announcing that it has ceased operations yesterday (June 19).
In a rather brief statement issued by the restaurant via a Facebook post, it wrote that it would be calling it a day and apologised to customers over the sudden announcement.
We regret any inconvenience caused and we thank you for your continuous support all these years.
Over the years, Sushi Tei had built itself into a formidable brand in Malaysia, where it has several outlets in KL, PJ, Puchong, Penang, Ipoh, and Sabah.
Sushi Tei outlets to stay open in Penang and Ipoh
The closure will see a majority of Sushi Tei’s outlets shuttering its doors, including its sole store in Sabah, where it operated for 12 long years.
The outlet confirmed its closing in a Facebook post, but assured customers that it was temporary and reminded them to “watch this space” for future updates.
Now that we have officially come to the end of this journey, we wanna thank you for being a BIG part of it. Rest assured that it’s only a temporary goodbye for now and we will definitely see you again very soon!
However, the company confirmed that its Penang and Ipoh outlets will stay open as usual and is looking to welcome customers into its doors.

- Gurney Plaza: 170-02-02, Plaza Gurney, 170, Persiaran Gurney,10250 George Town, Pulau Pinang
- Queensbay Mall: 3F-03, Queensbay Mall, Persiaran Bayan Indah,11900 Bayan Lepas, Pulau Pinang
- Ipoh Parade: G19C, Ipoh Parade, 105, Jalan Sultan Abdul Jalil,30450 Ipoh, Perak

Sushi Tei’s sudden decision to cease operations came as a shock for many, who were blindsided by the announcement and expressed sadness over the news.
At the time of writing, the company has yet to reveal the official reason for its closing.
